MESSAGES FROM CHECHU

25th July 2008

Hola Nicky,

I hope you are well. My knee is going better so I am happy about that.

Regards,

Chechu

22nd July 2008

Hola amigos.

I hope you are well. As you know, I had a bad crash on Friday.

Since then, I couldn’t train well. I just tried to train a couple of days. Bad: I was riding my bike as fast as I used to ride when I was 5 years old… So definitely I’ll stop for a few days.

I did an x-ray on my knee and the good news is that nothing is broken.

I have to take antibiotics because of the injury (abrasion), and the knee is swollen so I have to take anti-inflammatory too. I hope to be on the bike in two or three days preparing for the Vuelta.

Thanks for your support once again.

Chechu

23 February 2008

When Rebecca spoke with Chechu on Saturday afternoon, he told her that the team had already trained for 2 or 3 hours in the morning, and the weather in Palo Alto is good. He’s happy.

On ASO, Chechu’s opinion is that it’s a big mess, where everyone is at fault. But the powerful people, like the UCI, are most to blame for the current bad situation. He thinks everyone needs to work together to solve it. As he’s retiring next year, he doesn’t complain for his own sake, but it’s very bad for young riders.

The team is continuing to put pressure on the ASO, to get them to change their minds, it would be difficult, but he thought Johan is going to Astana next week to talk to the government, to work on calming down the situation.

Rebecca suggests that he might do something about it when he retires. Chechu laughs. It should be one of the really big names, he says, like Miguel Indurain or Gianni Bugno. Someone everyone would listen to and respect.

4 February 2008

Hola! I am back at home. It’s been quite difficult, because of jet lag. I wake up every day at 5 in the morning …

(Australia) was a wonderful experience. I really enjoyed it. The race was quite fast, but not so bad on the wheel. There were no mountains, which made it easier.

Now I am training again to focus on California.

At the same time, it looks that since the Giro is not inviting us, maybe my racing program will change. But I don’t know yet.

I am sad and disappointed about the decision that the Giro does not invite one of the best teams in the world. We are a completely new team, nothing to do with the old Astana and with their problems with doping. We are even controlled by an external company to clean our image, with many doping controls in and out of competition, as well as the controls from UCI, WADA, Spanish authorities …

So it looks to me that now it doesn’t matter if you are able to have a clean team and a good sponsor for being in the best races of the world. It is going to depend on the judgment of the organiser.

So, who is going to invest in cycling, creating an strong team, if there is no rules to be able to participate in the best races of the world and no guarantees?

Maybe this is what the Giro or Tour want. Weak teams so they can control them and have more power in international cycling. It is not just Astana. Other big pro tour teams are not invited.

Take care.

Chechu
19 December 2007

The training camp was nice, and just because we are competitive, we rode too fast for December!

We made some jokes, and had fun. It was quite cold too, but better than in Asturias where the temperatures are below zero!

The programme looks pretty nice to me. Maybe just too many planes and too many long trips, with many hours of difference … jetlag is coming.

I’ve never been to Australia before and it will be a nice experience. Also everyone says that California is becoming one of the better races in the season, because of the people and the good organisation.

And as you know, I love the Giro, so it’s a really good programme on paper. Let’s see …

Take care, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Chechu

November 2007

Hello to everyone.

I want to thank all my fans for the affection and support I have received in these last weeks. They have encouraged me to continue for one more year. In what will be my final season, I hope to give the best of myself and make you feel proud of my effort.

Victories are difficult, and I’ve never been a winner myself, but what I can give you is my work and my sacrifice in the year of my retirement.

Thank you for everything.

Chechu

But, whatever you choose to do, know that you have given it your all. You are a loyal teammate. Tough as nails. Your smiles brings smiles to many. It has been a pleasure to watch you race with this team. Congratulations on your victory this year. I expect to see you in the peloton next year. If not, seriously consider coaching the young talent. Thank you for for what you have contributed to this beautiful sport. Thank you for your voice in support of the riders. Thank you for what you do.

54. Sophia Maris - August 15, 2007

Chechu, I am sorry that you are retiring from cycling, you are an athlete I respect so much! I hope you will enjoy health and happiness in your new life. I also hope that the concern you showed for your fellow cyclists will continue, and that perhaps you will take on and active role behind the scenes in a more political way. You seem the perfect man to do it.

All the best, from a long time fan.

Sophia

55. Bambi - August 15, 2007

You are a gentleman, a sport hero, and a very nice man, so dont even consider to quit, a class act as you will find a spot in any team, I have zero doubts of that!!
So, Ill see you next year!
Go Chechu!!!
Good luck for Vuelta, we are going to be cheering for ya!

58. Bruno - September 4, 2007

Dear Chechu,

I hope you’ll find a team for 2008! I want to see you in the peloton! I wish I had the power to help you somehow… But the only thing I can do is to give you my support & love from Hungary!

77. Juls - November 12, 2007

Hola Chechu! You are all that is good in cycling. I wish you nothing but the best, and I expect to see you in the Pro European peloton in 2008. With your work and talent, any team would be LUCKY to have you riding for them. Venga Chechu!!

78. kris mortela - November 12, 2007

Chechu,

Hi, i am a great fan of yours since 2002. I saw you and Roberto Heras support Lance during the mountain stages in La Mongie and Plateau de Beille. How can I forget the way you paced the last of Lance’s rivals and shed them one by one. Those memories show how good you are as a cyclist, and how good you are as a team mate. Right now, I still believe you still have what it takes to be in the peloton next year. You can bring out experience which is very valuable when the going gets tough. i wish you luck Chechu, somewhere in the horizon a team beacons you to be a part of them.

Kris

79. M Jordan - November 12, 2007

Hello,
I, for one, am stunned that you do not yet have a contract for 2008. Perhaps the team managers no longer recognize the value of 1. talent; 2. a willingness to sacrifice; 3. loyalty (who can forget your calming influence on ‘the Lance’ on Luz Ardiden in 2003); 4. intelligence; 5. being nice (a scarily rare characteristic in the peloton I suspect). At any rate, whatever happens best wishes from a fan who sees you as an example of what sports, in general, and cycling, in particular, should be. All the best.
Matt

80. Sam Brower - November 12, 2007

I’ve enjoyed watching you for the past years at Discovery, I hope you find a team for next season and continue with your great career!!!

81. Peter in Michigan - November 12, 2007

Good luck with the contract…. kind of disappointing that someone like yourself is still waiting for a contract when the peloton is full of previously sanctioned riders that HAVE new contracts. How guys like David Millar get hired to ride for Slipstream is beyond me. I don’t know…. good luck man!

82. Luciano Barragan - November 12, 2007

Chechu,

Luciano

83. Amy Bush - November 12, 2007

Chechu,

I hope you know what dedicated fans you have and how loved and respected you are. You are an inspiration not only to those fans but to every single member of the professional peloton. I hope with all my heart that we get to see you ride at least 1 more year. But more so I hope that, whatever you choose to do with your future, you remain happy, healthy and content with your life.

With deepest respect,
Amy Bush
Charlotte, North Carolina

84. Annie - November 12, 2007

I admire you as an athlete and as man, and there are not many people that I can say that about these days. We need your goodness and your racing ability in the peleton. Best wishes in finding the right team for 2008.

Thanks for the memories and I look forward to more.

85. David Headrick - November 12, 2007

Chechu, I have watched you ride for many years, and I hope that I will continue to watch you ride for years to come. Your service to Lance and your attacks inspire me to ride my bike with enthusiasm. I will be a fan of whatever team you end up riding with. I hope 2008 is good for you. Take care. Your friend, Dave.

86. T.C.Hulsey - November 12, 2007

Hola Chechu,
I can’t believe you weren’t one of the first Discovery riders snapped up when they announced the end of the team. Cycling is a team sport, and no one exemplifies teamwork better than you. Who can forget you leading Lance and Roberto in the Alps and Pyrrennes on the way to their victorious bids in the big tours. Someone will come to their senses, and we’ll see you in the hills soon.

87. Sophia - November 12, 2007

Chechu! I want to see you at the head of the UCI one day! Till then, I hope you will achieve whatever makes you happiest and most comfortable. My best wishes to you and your family, and my warmest thanks to you for all you have offered in cycling.

88. Annick GUILPIN - November 12, 2007

Hola Chechu !

Any team who doesn’t sign Chechu will be very sorry. The epitome of a team player, and a VERY strong climber. I will always remember those classic charges up the mountains of the TDF, forever emblazoned in my memory. Comeon, ProTour teams? Get with it and sign this great rider! Go Chechu!

Chechu,

92. John - November 12, 2007

Just read of your situation on cyclingnews. I can’t believe a rider of your guts and experience is being left on the sidelines. With so many young climbers lining up to dominate the Grand Tours there should always be a place for a quality mountain domestique and you are one of the best. I keep my fingers crossed for you over the next few days. At least you can get an idea of your popularity amongst the fans of the sport from your messages of support.

93. Agnes - November 12, 2007

Chechu,

Wishing you all the best. Any team would be proud to have you riding with them.

99. Michel - November 12, 2007

Hy Chechu,
i am sorry when i heard from Nicky, that you don`t have found a new team.
I think this is a drama,if you want to ride one more year,it must be possible to find a pro tour team.Do you had asked Johan to go to the Astana-Squad?
Someone written some parts on the top from your great stageto Luz Ardiden in 2003,but for me,the better stage was 2 days before to Ax-3-Domains,when we saw you in the attack and i think, you had won this stage, but it shows, what a great man you are, wait for Lance and but him back on the top of the group, great job, fantastic.i wrote to Nicky from the great years on the alpe d huez in 2001,when you are on the way to dertroy the hole peleton, the same situation in 2003 on the alpe.Thank you for these great moments i have ever seen in cycling.I wish you all the best for the future, whatever you will do,good luck to you and your family.I hope we can see you once again on the road next year.
So far your great fans from Germany
Michel

100. Meylina - November 12, 2007

Hope you’ll get a contract soon because your fans would love to see you in the Tour peloton in 2008. Good luck and thanks for all the memorable years with Lance.

101. Donn - November 12, 2007

Chechu!!!

We’re all wishing you the best in finding your new home in cycling, for 08 and beyond. From what I’ve read and heard throughout your career, you’re an extreme talent and resource, both on and off the bike. Your hard work and dedication will serve you well. Go Chechu!!!

Stay positive,
Donn

102. Mags - November 12, 2007

Chechu:
Like all your other adoring fans, i sincerely hope you have a place in the peloton in 2008. Cycling needs your total professionalism and exceptional talents.

I watched in awe as you buried yourself for each of Lance Armstrong’s victories — always with such dedication and graciousness. I really missed seeing you in this year’s Tour and hope I’ll have the pleasure of watching you in the 2008 Tour.

If I were the czar of cycling, you’d be sitting pretty with a great contract on a great team by now. Alas, I’m not sure anyone’s listening to me.

However, I live in hope… for great things to come your way… soon!

Mags in Virginia

103. Paul - November 12, 2007

Hey Chechu:

My wife and I wish you the best of luck, either in your continuing professional cycling career, or in your retirement and re-entry into “civilian” ventures.

As I recall, you are a college graduate engineer, so there shouldn’t be a lack of work in your other profession, even if cycling does not adequately recognize your continued value.

I wanted to comment that we have always been impressed by your professionalism, your willingness to sacrifice your own personal goals for a team, and the “class act” way that you have always conducted yourself. It has been an honor to follow your career.

Best of luck. And may your wheels always be true!

105. Christian - November 12, 2007

Dear Mr. Rubiera — I cannot mention your name without thinking of how you laid all your best in decimating mountain climbers up the climbs in the Alps and Pyrenees. They hated you but we viewers loved it!!!! I am impressed to see how you went mano a mano with the best climbers in the world, and all they got was a view of your arse, and course Lance’s. Even if you don’t find employment next year, I know with your skills, guts, and amazing work ethic, you’ll do more amazing stuff. Good luck and thanks for the memories, Chechu.

Christian

106. JR - November 12, 2007

You will find a team, I am not even worried a bit.

I tell you what tho, for all the help you gave Lance, he should be the first one on the phone returning the favor and helping you.

You are a serious inspiration!

Best.

108. Bruno Lopez - November 12, 2007

Hola chechu. Espero verte algun dia!!!

109. Larry Martin - November 12, 2007

Dear Chechu,

You are a unique and different rider to us. Your words and actions on and off the bike show us that you’re more than a world-class cyclist. You’re also a truly excellent human being. You deserve to do what will make you happy. And, to speak selfishly for those of us who love the sport, cycling desperately needs people like you, in whatever role you would like to play.

My very best wishes for you, on the roads and off.

110. Tina Smith - November 13, 2007

Hi Chechu,
I’m another of your huge fans here in the USA that wants to wish you all the luck in the world in whatever pursuits you follow. Hopefully, that will include ProTour cycling for the near future. I agree with all your other fans who say any team would be luck to have you as an addition.
My favorite moments watching you ride include you and Lance together on Luz Ardiden in 2003, but I was most excited when I got to see you riding in person in the 2005 Tour de Georgia. You rode so bravely on Woody Gap and Brasstown Bald, it was thrilling.
I hope to have another chance to see you in a race on American soil. Thanks again.

Tina Smith

111. Glenn - November 13, 2007

Chechu has been a stud in the pro peleton for longer than most of us will be at our peak in whatever our chosen profession is. He has also raced with integrity, style, honor and selflessness. How could the professional peleton ride without him in this dire time of need. Any teams out there should be in serious consideration of signing this wonderful athelete/human being for not only his riding ability but also for consideration into his aquired skills that would be benficial to the younger riders. I am also sure that he could gracefully make the change into director when that time comes. We all got to see one of his teammates go out in the style that he deserved, could any of us forget seeing Eki on the front for the first lap of the Champs eleyse? I didn’t think so. Give Chechu the finish that the sport owes him, he has not asked for anything for himself in his entire career, we owe him that much .

112. Cecille Juresko - November 13, 2007

Chechu-

I’ve followed your career for several years and you are an inspiration as a cyclist, a teammate and a gentleman. I wish you the best and know that the right thing will come to you. You are most deserving. Please know that you have fans all over the world pulling for you.

113. Frost48908 - November 13, 2007

Chechu – I also enjoyed watching you work – not only for Lance, but for Levi. I was fairly new to cycling when Levi placed third in the Vuelta, and I was impressed when, shortly after Phil and Paul said your work for the day was done and you would just drag yourself to the finish, Levi seemed to “crack” and start going backwards. You managed to find something left to pace him back into the race, and I’ve been a fan of yours ever since. Surely some team will realize what as asset you are; it would be great if you could stay with Johan, but if not I wish you the best wherever you go.

Susan

114. Michel - November 13, 2007

@glenn,
yeah thats an great idea,Chechu leads the pack on the Champs.in this hopefull dream i booked my tickets to france. But better will be,when he win a stage in the mountains,at its best in the alpes on the climb of alpe d `huez with so lot of panache when he was on the attack to lead the group of favorites to the top of these mountain. He on his TREK-bike in the US-Postal-Trikot,leadind the favorites in the last climb was one of the greatest moments,i have ever seen in professional cycling.
Thank you Chechu, for all the great moments.

Keep the faith. May your wheels turn smoothy and easy for you, my friend.

Hi Chechu. Congratulations. Your move to Astana coincides with your wish to cycle for another year. I wish you all the luck. Make your exit at Champs Elysse next year by being a part of the Tour squad. I am sure you will have a fruitful final year. I am excited to see you again tackle the mountains. 141. Joan Poates - November 17, 2007

Chechu you’re wrong that you have never been a winner – you’ve won our hearts and admiration. You have shown us time and time again the kind of man you are – PURE CLASS. There are more ways to win then crossing the line first and the proof is in all these messages.
Joan

142. Meylina - November 17, 2007

WOW!!! CONGRATULATIONS on signing with Astana!!! You guys are going to ROCK in Le Tour!

143. Jerry & Angie - November 17, 2007

Chechu, we must correct your words by saying, you are very much a winner!
So glad things worked out for one more year. See ya at the races!

144. Charlotte - November 17, 2007

Chechu…you may not have won – but you certainly were cause of many who did AND just stop that “and I´ve never been a winner myself” talk! You have so many “things” that make you a winner and you’ll go far, far, far in life because of them — there is not enough room in our hearts for your winnings! I cannot wait to see you race another year – bring it on! Charlotte

145. Mars - November 17, 2007

Hey Chechu! You lucky mountain goat – we told ya everything will work out fine eventually. Congrats on your being reunited with Johan and most of your disco mates @ Astana. I first learned about it in thepaceline then @ cyclingnews. When it rains it really pours, Chris Horner and The Goose is also going your way. Astana will definitely be my team next season. I’m so excited, bring it on!

147. Martha - November 17, 2007

Chechu,

What wonderful news to come home to after a lovely fall day in my city.

You will always be a winner to me and all your fans who think you wield the biggest and baddest hammer in the peloton. You are heart, courage and teamwork rolled into one fabulous man.

Felicidades, mi amigo!!

148. M Maureen, Washintgon State USA - November 18, 2007

You have always given us your best effort, Chechu. Being proud of you- on and off your bike- is easy. I am thrilled that you will share your final riding year with us on a team that appreciates what you have contributed for so long to the success of others. Your influence over the young Kazakhstanis coming to the team will be another meaningful contribution. Thank-you. I look forward to the ride.

149. Ashton - November 18, 2007

Che Chu, if I had not made up my mind to root for Astana before your announcment, it has been made up now. Thank you for riding for another season. All of us will enjoy following this last year of your career. Thank you for the memories.

150. Abby - November 19, 2007

I have to disagree strongly with Chechu’s message to his fans !! He says he’s never been a “winner” himself, but he’s absolutely a winner. Everyone knows cycling is a team sport and there is no way someone can win a Grand Tour without a team of winners supporting him. Doing his job well, and helping his team succeed – and doing it with class, dignity and humility is the defninition of winning.

So glad to see you on Astana next season!

151. Paul - November 19, 2007

Hey Chechu:

I was very pleased to see that you will be riding another year, but I must beg to differ with your humble suggestion that you’ve “never been a winner”.

A “winner” is not always the first person across the line. A true WINNER is a person who plays by the rules, who places team above self, and who competes with dignity and professionalism.

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. And a WINNER in every sense of the word.

I look forward to watching you compete again next year.

165. Charlotte - February 21, 2008

OH MY GOODNESS — Chechu, you ROCKED Cali in Stage 3! I believe I saw you grinning as the thought of shredding legs and peeling people off the back of what turned out to be your “little” group. Can I say again, I am so glad you that didn’t retire and decided to give it one more year — ROCK ON!

166. Sophia Maris - February 21, 2008

Oh what a pleasure it was to watch you ride yesterday! Thank you Chechu, and keep it up.

167. Shaila - February 21, 2008

Oh Chechu! Thank you for your great job on Wednesday! You were perfect! Just like in old time when you worked for Lance during the Tour! I couldn’t take my eyes off you! Thank you! 169. Julia - February 22, 2008

Wonderful work on the ride up Mount Hamilton and Sierra Road at the Tour of California on Wednesday. My eyes were GLUED to the television watching a site so familiar–your pace destroying the rest of the pack in favor of ASTANA , reminding me of the Lance years at the Tour de France! It also reminded me just how beautiful the sport of cycling can be!!!

Thank you, Thank you!!!

Your loyal fan always,
Julia from Napa, California, USA

170. Cecille Juresko - February 22, 2008

171. Rebecca - February 22, 2008

Wow!

Wednesday was a great ride, thrilling! The TV cameras were on you constantly, Chechu.

It was such a great performance, and all the talk was so positive. It made me forget there are any problems in cycling.

Cycling is still the most beautiful sport in the world.

You have always shown us the beauty of the sport. Every year of your career.

More, please!

Chechu
You are a ROCK STAR!

174. Mags from Arlinton, VA - February 22, 2008

Chechu,

It made me so happy — and proud — to watch you shred the peloton on Mt. Hamilton and Sierra Rd in the TOC!!! And it made me even happier when I heard Levi say at the end of the race it gave him chills to see you in top form leading the team up the mountain like days of old.

You are such a special rider — and we, the loyal US Postal/ Discovery/ Astana fans are so thankful that you are racing with the team this year.

Watching the big (light) blue train again was just so much fun.

It almost, but not quite, made me forget about the injustice of the race organizers who’ve unfairly left Astana off the race lists. I will continue to hope that somehow they will come to their senses and let all of you ride.

In the meantime, thank you, thank you for such an inspiring ride!

175. Martha - March 6, 2008

Yippee, Chechu! A stage win at Mucia!! How wonderful to learn of your victory after my wonderful early morning ride.

Bask in your victory, as the strongest and kindest man won today.

I am so proud to be your fan.

177. kai - March 7, 2008

ENHORABUENA POR TU TRIUNFO DE ETAPA EN LA VUELTA A MURCIA. SOBRE LA BICI YA ERES GRANDE, PERO CUANDO BAJAS DE ELLA AÚN CRECES MÁS, PORQUE ENTONCES TE TRANSFORMAS EN TODO UN SEÑOR. TUVE OCASION DE COMPROBARLO CUANDO ESTUVISTE ALOJADO EN EL HOTEL DONDE TRABAJO. ASÍ QUE MI ENHORABUENA ES DOBLE: POR TU TRIUNFO Y POR SER COMO ERES: TODO UN SEÑOR.

189. George Blanchard - April 28, 2008

Dear Chechu
I too retire this year but because I really am too old to keep on teaching. I see it as a step to the next wonderful stage of my life with time for my wife, and a little time on my bike.
I hope that you and your wife have great success in whatever you plan for your future.
I always remember the day that Lance won on Alp D’Huez, having played with Telecom into believing that Lance was having a bad day. Seeing the last efforts that you made before Lance’s attack, and you coming to what seems like a complete standstill but wasn’t, will be always stay with me as an example of a true professional.
I am absolutely delighted that you managed a stage win and have contributed so much to the success of Astana this year. I hope that all the young riders really do appreciate what a fantastic role model they have and I hope that whatever you choose to do the world of cycling does not lose your knowledge but most of all your integrity and passion for this wonderful sport.
Best wishes for the rest of the season and every success for the next stage of your life.
George
